Focus Group Questionnaire:

Focus Group Questions:

We have tried to keep the music video as suggestive as possible, with small glimpses of explicity. We find that this way we can fulfil the audiences expectations in small doses, which was more effective to the intention of suggestion. We have tried to build a structure in editing to show the two Man ray boys on the sofa are looking at the girls on the dance floor and behind the corrugated plastic. We also are creating the image of Nico; the head girl of the club, who always keeps an eye on the other dancers to make sure their doing their jobs correctly.  However, always in a subtle way, to again show the suggestion of sexual references.

Questions:

-          What did you think the video was about?

-          Was it boring? Confusing? Entertaining?

-          What were your favourite / least favourite parts?

-          What were your favourite / least favourite characters?

-          What impact did the video have on you?

-          What would you like to have seen added?

-          Who, if anyone, would you recommend it to?

-          Do you have any other comments?

Internet and Downloading Music:

How can downloading music from legal sites like iTunes be an asset to the music industry?

Through the internet, consumers are able to buy music from legal sites such as iTunes. This is very beneficial as it circulates income for the music industry. Downloading music from iTunes is helps the music industry as it is a much cheaper way than having to physically produce a CD and Album for an artist. Through iTunes it is all virtually done, which makes the cost of releasing a song a lot less expensive then it was 10 years ago. The independent sector benefit hugely from this as they don’t have as much capital as conglomerate companies, therefore iTunes is a cheap and more accessible way for them to market their artists online. This also allows them to target a wider audience, as it is done online and can be seen by more people for a lower cost. This helps independent labels as they often cannot afford to provide their tracks digitally. Legal sites such as iTunes, finances the music industry to its maximum potential as it aims at a mainstream audience and the cost are much lower.

How can downloading from illegal sites strip money from the music industry?

Downloading music from illegal sites strips the music industry of its income, thus making it more difficult for them to develop new songs; creating a halt in the music industry as no consumer is paying for the music. The music industry makes money by owning the copyright of an artists song, however when illegal sites share the songs with the public it causes the music industry  to miss out and lose money as people are getting the songs for free. Which in turn makes the music industry go bankrupt as they cannot fund anymore songs.

What arguments are there to suggest that all music that has been downloaded (legally or illegally) will benefit the music industry in some way?

With legal downloading this benefits the music industry financially as people are buying their music, which therefore is bringing income to them. However some people may not be able to afford the music that they sell, and therefore the conglomerates cannot reach out to a complete global audience. With illegal downloading the conglomerates miss out and loss money as people can download the song for free, which reduces and stops income for the music industry. However with consumers sharing the songs for free, the song can gain global acknowledgement and therefore can reach worldwide fame, but without the financial benefit.

How can illegal download sites act as a statement against the dominance of the music industry by rich conglomerates?

Illegal download sites can act as a statement against the dominance of the music industry by rich conglomerates as it stops the rich conglomerates from making money. The statement can show that people aren’t willing to pay so much for all the songs that these conglomerates make and would rather have it for free. It also stops the conglomerates from getting what they want which is money from a global audience, and therefore this is a statement against that. This in turn makes the rich conglomerates vulnerable to bankruptcy, as eventually there will be no demand to buy songs but instead get the songs for free.

What impact has the downloading of songs had on the ways in which people consume music – are more  people downloading individual songs rather than whole albums do you think?

I think this has had an impact as more people are downloading individual songs rather than whole albums. It is because of the online age that we live in that allows consumers to choose what songs they want. Rather than 10 years ago where if a person liked one song they would have to buy the whole album, which would cost the consumer a lot more money than just the single song itself.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of downloading music for the music fan?

The modern day technology has had advantages and disadvantages as conglomerates may not make as much money, as people will choose individual songs rather than having to buy a whole album at a higher price. However, on the other hand downloading songs has made it a a lot cheaper and more accessible for the conglomerates to sell their songs online, in places such as iTunes. The advantages for the music fans are that it’s a lot more convenient and accessible to buy, they are now just a few clicks away rather than having to go out to a shop and buy it. A disadvantage is that it’s not the same experience as buying it physically and being able to hold it in your hands.

Photos from shoot day 3:

In this photo we were testing the camera on screen.
Here Tom was setting up the design for corrugated plastic.

We were well prepared the next morning with all the costumes and props that we needed and the majority of the cast showing up on time, the two boys in the morning and the dancers in the afternoon, however only one male member of the dancers turned up so we had to work around this.

The first steps of setting up the design for the corrugated plastic and the girls dancing behind it.

Photos from shoot day 2:

A photo of the corrugated plastic with a bright light behind it.

The two Man Ray boys with the inflatable floor Two of the dancers by the corrugated plastic.

The only part of the shoot I wish had gone better was the pole dancing in the dancing scene where the characters looked much less natural and looked more like they were performing to the camera rather than just in a club scene. We managed our talent well as we constantly had one of the group in a directory role constantly directing and telling the cast what to do how to act even throughout the shots were going on. The bit of the shoot I enjoyed the most was the plastic panels scene because there were parts of this that I filmed which I thought I filmed really well and it was also the most successful part in my opinion, especially in representation of the overall themes. The part I’m looking forward to most in the editing is the watchers scene with the rising floor as we filmed plenty of different shot types and angles for this scene and it’ll be interesting working out which shots to cut into and how create an interesting sequence that relates to voyeurism.

Me setting up the sofa and directing the Man Ray boys what to do.
Aside from this we had to dress the two watchers and make sure they were looking as identical as we could get them looking, for example making them switch their rings onto the same finger, take off one of their watches, do their hair the same way, make their suits look the same etc. After this we could begin setting up the lighting whilst one of us rehearsed the poses we created for them based on Man Ray photos.

Photos from the day of the shoot 1:

Setting up the nightclub scene.

We had one major issue in that our male cast for the dancing scenes didn’t turn up and we had to work around this by reworking the concept of no sexual identity, meaning that in this club there was no sexuality everyone did what they wanted. We had to rework this as it was pretty unclear without any male cast to play the parts, so we ended up just turning it into a female fetish bondage club with a minor freedom of sexuality theme. I think the scene with the plastic panels set was the best because the lighting and actors looked really genuine and it represented the most meaning throughout our video. The panels were almost like windows into a fantasy world where there were no rules or labels and no societal condemnations on what people did, this part for me was the most representational of our traditional idea of the ‘Grey Room’ taken from Fifty Shades of Grey’s ‘Red Room’.

Painting the walls black to give it that underground dark nightclub feel.

Our production group worked efficiently as a team, each swapping roles so everyone put equal effort into each aspect of the music video but also in learning off each other’s performance in each role and helping each other to perform each role to the best level. A lesson that I learnt during the shoot was to, in future, plan ahead for possible unreliability. In the case of our whole male cast dropping out, if we had planned for the unexpected we could’ve cast an understudy to step into their place and perform the roles we needed.

Us filming the girls behind the corrugated plastic.

The only adjustments we may need to make to our website and album artwork designs are to take the focus of them off a male homosexual audience because of the issue of our male cast dropping out, however we still managed to create a similar looking club scene using women instead of a mix of both genders.

Further Post - Production work that is required:

We are working on our CD Digital Packs and the Website for our Music Video. We have an idea of what design we want on the Album cover. We want to incorporate Man Ray photos with suggestive sexual references from our Video. We also want to have sunglasses on the front with the reflection of a Man Ray photo reflecting on the glass lens.  We are making the website to attract our Target Audience, with bright colours, suggestive sexual references and using synergy with Facebook and Twitter, to maximise our viral market.

How the Project is Developing and Changing:

In the original plans it was meant to be boys and girls, so lesbians and gays. However due to all the men who were casted hadn't turned up, it turned into a lesbian club. Having said that, it seemed to have worked better for us and our intention of sexual suggestion.  Apart from that we have stuck with our original plans, as we were all well prepared.

Issues in the Editing Process:

We found explicity a problem. Due to the sexual references of the girls, we had to edit it in a way that no offense would be caused to anyone. We did this by editing during blurs, flashes in the camera from the lighting and using the corrugated plastic. We also found it quite hard to explain to the audience  the roles of the two Man Ray boys and Nico. We overcame this by bringing a structure to the video, with more fluidity of the making it more obvious that Nico was in charge and that the boys were clients at this club.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Product so far:

The Strengths and Weaknesses:

Strengths:

Continuity of the editing.

Editing on the beat of the music.

Smooth cuts.

In and out of focus shots; where they have been edited.

The pace of the editing in time with the beat of the song.

Weaknesses:

More structure needed.

More sexual suggestion.

Cut down from 3 minutes to 2:40 minutes.

Commentary of our Rough Cut:

We have tried to keep the music video as suggestive as possible, with small glimpses of explicity. We find that this way we can fulfil the audiences expectations in small doses, which was more effective to the intention of suggestion. We have tried to build a structure in editing to show the two Man ray boys on the sofa are looking at the girls on the dance floor and behind the corrugated plastic. We also are creating the image of Nico ; the head girl of the club, who always keeps an eye on the other dancers to make sure their doing their jobs correctly.  However, always in a subtle way, to again show the suggestion of sexual references.

Evaluation of our rough cut:

Today we completed our rough cut and now have downloaded it onto a hard drive and will be uploading it shortly onto our blogs. The purpose of the rough cut is to give a basic structure to the video, so that the audience can get an idea of what it looks like. We still need to add more structure and less explicity to it, which we will do for our Final Cut. We are pleased so far, as we have cut shots on the beat of the music, we have kept it fluid with the lighting, shining into the camera lense and editing it so that it opened up with another shot of light on the camera lense.

Write up of shoot day 5:

During editing I look forward to seeing how the nightclub scene turned out, as on screen it looked incredible, with the dancers, lighting and the DJ dancing in the background. I feel our production group worked very well together, we were all very organised, attentive and new exactly what we were doing and how we had to do it. I learned from this shoot, that we all should have made 100% sure that all our cast were ready and free on the day of the shoot. We will only have to make a very few changes to our website, as the concept is still the same except there are no more gays involved only lesbians.

Write up of shoot day 4:

I thought we had managed our actors well, as they were all very attentive and did exactly what we wanted; this really helped the shoot go well, as they all listened and acted professionally. I especially enjoyed the scene where our main lesbian woman who was in charge of the nightclub eyed up all her dancers to make sure they were doing their jobs well, I felt that this summed up the type of tone we were aiming for in our Music Video.

Write up of shoot day 3:

Our only problem was that none of the boys we had casted had turned up. So we had to change our concept of homosexual men being involved and just have the sexual suggestion of lesbians. In the end we thought that it looked better without boys as we liked the idea of aiming at smaller target audience, which gave our music video uniqueness. I thought the most successful part of the shoot was the nightclub scene. As you could feel the whole tone and mood was positive, with the DJ, the pole dancers and the lesbians on the dance floor. We had great footage of them, with close ups and tracking shots, really giving it the sense of a twisted lesbian nightclub.

Write up of shoot day 2:

We had dark lighting in front of the plastic screens and behind them were multi coloured rays of light reflecting it on the plastic giving it a blurry look, which was perfect for the shoot as it looked more subtle and suggestive. We felt that we had created the look of our concept very well and were all pleased with the outcome for that scene. We divided our roles by directing, filming, lighting and pressing playback. We decided to rotate the roles every thirty minutes so that we kept full focus and didn’t get bored of doing the same thing over and over. I personally feel I was strongest in directing, as I felt that I could communicate well with the actors, and make them feel confident in these sexualized scenes. I also had a few ideas that I wanted to explore with the actors and the camera which turned out to be very useful in bringing our intention of sexual suggestion.

Editing

We have started editing and are now a week into finishing our rough cut. We will be uploading the rough cut next week. We need to develop more structure to the video.

Write up of Shoot Day 1:

Music Promo – Write up of Shoot Day:

The day before the shoot we had to set up all the mise en scene, such as the costumes, the set design and the lighting. We did this so that we were prepared on the shoot day and had all our props equipment on the ready whenever we needed it; we felt we were well organised. I felt confident in the morning as I knew everything was ready and prepared for the shoot. We all felt that everything would go smoothly and as planned. When we arrived in the studio we ran a checklist of all the cast, all the girls had turned up which was the most important piece for our shoot, but there were no boys. The studio looked ready for the girls to do their suggestion of sexuality behind the strip pieces of plastic. Between each plastic strip piece was a black wall, where we had one girl on every wall dressed up in kinky leather outfits giving it that sexual underground feel of a club.

Drawing upon similar artists album work:

This is the artist website and album artwork of Sven Vath, frankfurt based DJ who is also signed to cocoon records the same as our artist Maetrik. We can draw upon his album artwork for inspiration in designing the digipack for our artist because the two artists conjure up similarities in their music and style, and in particular with relation to the planned style of our music video this album cover draws upon man ray like themes. We can draw upon this in terms of colour scheme and style, however due to the nature of our track we would make our digipack look more underground and edgy.

This is a screenshot taken from his website, it provides a more colourful angle on his promotional art. If we decided to go in a more contrasted colourful foreground on a dark background direction then we could draw on this example of a similar artists expression of his image and genre through digipack.

This is another example of a different style of Sven Vath's album cover design if we decide to take the digipack in a more retro style without the use of colour. The common theme between all of these covers is that they all feature a portrait, ours draws on this theme but in a different style with ideas of a pair of glasses and a Man Ray image in the reflection of the lenses.

This is a fourth example of a direction our album cover artwork could take in creating a more rebellious underground artist image through the use of stencil grafitti on a public derelict wall.

Targeting our audience for our campaign:

By using Demographic segmentation, we can profile our target audience for our artist(Maetrik). We are aiming for middle to upper class, female and male, majority of whom are Caucasian. They are hetro and homosexual. We are aiming for the party scene, such as Ibiza, Mykonos and Miami, this is what are target audience would be. As the ages would be from 17 to 27, they are young, so they would put in the JINCARS scale of C1/B (supervisory, clerical/middle management, professional)  as they are all very young and most likely don’t have that many qualifications. We are also using Psychographic segmentation where we profile our consumer and they would be classed as Experiences, as they are young, enthusiastic, impulsive and rebellious. This is all part of the Techno genre, which fits in perfectly for our artist(Maetrik).

Response from Record Label:

Why is Storyboarding imporatnt?

A Storyboard is vital to allow the director to visualise the flow of camera shots through means of a graphical representation using captions to describe the basic details. It is as a planning tool to give the directors a clear understanding of what shots they need to shoot on the day, we have used this as a key element in our planning of our music video for example inside the club we sketched out the shots we wanted, a mid two shot, and drew them into the set which was further explained in the details. This allowed us to have a clear pictorial guide on what our shot would look like and how it would relate to the other shots in a rough sketch. The Storyboard then allowed us to discuss with regards to how the video would be directed and the direction of photography within the video. This is a vital tool in the music video process, particularly for the shots that we plan on editing back into through use of a green screen or special effects so that we know exactly what shot we need from the day of shooting to edit into to get the end shot we want.
Storyboards are used in each element of production. In Pre-Production storyboards are used to plan the feel and overall mood of the video by planning out the costumes and set and seeing how all the elements of each shot works without the added details of lighting, camera movement and action yet.
During Production copies of the storyboards are handed out to every member of the crew so that everyone has the same idea of what shots need to be created on the shoot day.
In Post Production the storyboard is used as a visual reminder of what shots were filmed and in what order, it is particularly important in the editing of videos that use special effects.

Set Design:

These were our preliminary set design sketches, they consist of the DJ set with the plastic either side dripped in water and colours, a closer shot of the plastic and the man ray picture theme we're driving towards, a birdseye view of the plastic and the rooms inside and out, the lips sofa with the man ray back drop and the purple room with mirrors. They each also contain ideas for shot types and camera positioning.
For the mise en scene, we are here going
to have plastic strips coming down from the wall,
and they are going to be lit up in red, green
and purple.
This is an establishing shot of the set
as we see in the four sectors of the circle,
there is the private show rooms, the bar
and the nightclub.
This is going to be the set design for the two people
sitting on the red lips sofa, watching a private show,
with the Man Ray photo projected at the back of the wall.

In this set design we were going to have mirrors all over the room,
and bright lights reflecting on them. However this was going to be to hard
to film, so we changed that room, into another show room.

Idea for Album cover for Music Video:

We have decided to name are artist, Matrix, and his name on the front of the album cover will be in white font bending round at the top of the cover. We are then going to have ray ban looking sunglasses in the front cover with the reflection of a Man Ray photo of two woman’s faces next to each other in the lenses. The background of the front cover is going to be black colouring shaded in pencil. The reason to why we have the name Matrix is because it means a situation or surrounding substance within which something else originates, develops, or is contained. Were using this because we want to have that techno feel and discreet sexual images related to the Man Ray photo, which contains the history of surrealism and sexuality being exposed at its very beginning. The reason to why we are having Matrix in large white font is because we want people to recognise the name on the album cover, and the white font to show innocence in his name and music. We want his name to bend over the album cover as part of a discreet sexual reference. We wanted the sunglasses as part of the techno drug related substances that people take at underground techno raves, as we want people in our video wearing sunglasses to cover their dilated pupils from drugs, but this is again done in a discreet way, as part of our Man Ray image in our Music Video. The reason to having the two women next to each other in the lenses of the sunglasses will be to show that the sunglasses are watching these discreet sexual performances that are going on, which will be happening in our Music Video.
